Outdoor bench cushions and porch swing cushions are measured the same way - length, width, and thickness - but the key is measuring the seating surface of the frame, not the existing worn cushion. Existing cushions compress and shrink over time, so measuring them directly leads to a replacement that is too small.
Length: Measure the full usable seat length from one end of the bench or swing to the other. For porch swings, this is typically 48 to 60 inches for a two-person swing and 60 to 72 inches for a three-person swing. Most standard park-style outdoor benches seat two people and measure 42 to 48 inches. Measure your actual frame rather than relying on standard sizes, as dimensions vary between manufacturers.
Width: Measure the front-to-back depth of the seat. Outdoor bench cushions are typically 17 to 20 inches deep. Porch swing cushions are usually 17 to 19 inches deep to match the seat depth and prevent the cushion overhanging the front edge. A cushion that is too deep will fold up against the back support; too narrow and it leaves the back of the seat exposed.
Thickness: Standard bench and swing cushions use 2.5 to 3.5 inches of Dryfast open-cell foam. This thickness provides good seating comfort and drains quickly after rain. If the swing or bench is used primarily for lounging or long periods of sitting, 4 inches gives noticeably more comfort. Very thin decorative covers over existing frames can use 2 inches.
Porch swing back cushion: Many porch swings have a back rail where a separate back cushion can be tied. Back cushions for swings are typically 12 to 15 inches tall and match the full length of the swing. If you want a matching seat and back set, order both at the same time in the same Sunbrella fabric to ensure a consistent colour and dye lot across the full set.
Ties and fastenings: Bench and porch swing cushions benefit from tie-on fastenings to prevent the cushion shifting along the seat. Ties loop around the bench legs or through the swing frame. Specify tie position and preferred length when ordering - front ties, back ties, or both.
How do I measure for a porch swing cushion?
Measure the width and depth of the swing seat, and the height and depth of the swing back. Most porch swings have a separate seat and back cushion. Note whether you need ties to attach the cushion to the swing frame, as these can be added at checkout.
Why choose Sunbrella fabric for outdoor bench cushions?
Sunbrella is the most durable outdoor fabric available. It is solution-dyed, meaning the colour goes all the way through the fibre - not just on the surface - so it resists fading even in direct sun for years. It is also mould-resistant, easy to clean with soap and water, and backed by a 5-year warranty.
How long will a Sunbrella outdoor bench cushion last?
With normal care, Sunbrella cushions typically last 5-10 years outdoors. The fabric itself will outlast most foam fills. Bringing cushions inside or covering them during winter significantly extends their lifespan.
Are these cushions suitable for a porch swing in a rainy climate?
Yes. Sunbrella fabric is water-repellent and dries quickly after rain. The foam fill we use for outdoor cushions is also quick-dry grade, so water that does penetrate the cover drains and dries rather than staying trapped inside the cushion.

Measure each piece separately. Never use a worn old cushion as your template - compressed foam and stretched covers give inaccurate dimensions.

For a porch swing cushion:
If your swing or bench also has a backrest that needs a cushion, measure the back panel height and width separately and order as an individual piece.
Sunbrella is solution-dyed from the fiber up - the color runs through every thread rather than sitting on the surface. This gives it genuine UV fade resistance that holds up through years of direct outdoor sun exposure, not just a season or two. It is mold and mildew resistant, water repellent, and backed by a 5-year manufacturer warranty. For outdoor bench and swing cushions that stay outside through full sun and changing weather, Sunbrella delivers a measurably longer service life and a consistently better appearance over time than any standard outdoor fabric alternative.
Yes. If your existing foam insert is still firm and in good shape but the cover has faded or worn through, ordering a Sunbrella replacement cover only is the most cost-effective approach. Measure your existing insert from edge to edge in all three dimensions, select your Sunbrella fabric at checkout, and we will sew a new cover to those measurements. If you also need a new foam insert, add one at checkout and we will build the complete cushion as a matched set.
High-density foam is the right choice for most Sunbrella outdoor bench and porch swing cushions. It holds its shape through regular daily outdoor use without compressing or developing soft spots over time - which matters for bench seating and swing cushions that see sustained contact across a full outdoor season. For porch swings used primarily for relaxed sitting and afternoon lounging, high-density foam in a medium-firm grade provides consistent, comfortable support. For swing beds where the cushion serves as a napping surface, choosing a thicker high-density foam gives better all-day comfort. Fiberfill is a softer alternative suited to covered porch swings and sheltered bench seating used occasionally where a plush surface feel is the priority.
Yes. Ordering all pieces in the same Sunbrella fabric at once is the recommended approach for a coordinated outdoor setup - it ensures all cushions come from the same dye lot and the color is consistent across every piece, whether that is a garden bench, porch swing, glider, or any other outdoor seat in the arrangement. Each piece is sized to its own dimensions, so provide measurements for each separately when ordering and we will build every cushion to its own specifications in the same Sunbrella fabric.
Ties loop around the bench legs, frame, or swing structure and hold the cushion firmly in position during use - particularly important for swing cushions that move constantly during sitting. An antiskid base adds a grip layer between the cushion bottom and the seat surface, which works well on smooth painted wood, composite, aluminum, and powder-coated metal frames. For swings and benches with no obvious tie points, an antiskid base provides solid grip for regular outdoor use. Select both options at checkout and we will build them in.
Remove the cover using the YKK zipper and brush off any loose dirt or debris first. Sunbrella cleans up with mild soap, water, and a soft brush and air dries quickly. For mildew spots or heavier outdoor buildup, a diluted bleach solution is safe on Sunbrella without affecting the color - rinse thoroughly and air dry completely before reattaching. Avoid machine drying as heat can affect the water-resistant finish over time. Regular brushing and cleaning between full washes extends the cover life significantly, particularly on fully exposed outdoor pieces in humid or high-pollen environments.
With proper care, Sunbrella cushions are built to hold their color and structural integrity for many years of outdoor use. The 5-year manufacturer warranty covers color loss and strength loss under normal outdoor conditions - and with consistent cleaning, debris removal, and off-season storage or covering, Sunbrella cushions regularly outlast the warranty period by several seasons. High-density foam inserts paired with Sunbrella covers give the best long-term combination - the cover resists the outdoor elements while the foam maintains its support through sustained daily use.
